仙台城跡

伊達62万石の居城跡。天然の要害・青葉山に建つことから、仙台市民には通称「青葉城」とも呼ばれ親しまれています。城下を見渡す伊達政宗公の騎馬像や復元された脇櫓、石積み技術の粋を物語る本丸北壁に往時のイメージを重ねることができ、壮大な歴史ロマンを感じます。

瑞鳳殿

瑞鳳殿は、伊達政宗公の霊屋です。清廉な空気を湛える杉木立に抱かれた境内には、同じく二代忠宗公の感仙殿、三代綱宗公の善応殿があり、貴重な資料を展示する資料館も併設。絢爛豪華な廟建築を間近に堪能し、伊達家の歴史・文化にふれるひとときを過ごせます。

毎年5月第3日曜とその前日に開催。一日目の宵まつりは一般参加もOKなすずめ踊りの「総踊り」の演舞で賑わい、二日目の本まつりの「時代絵巻巡行」では勇壮な武者行列と山鉾が街を練り歩きます。

Sendai, the “City of Trees” has been loved as a city with harmonious blend of urban and natural elements.

Sendai is packed with tourist attractions where you can feel the history of the powerful warlord Date Masamune (1567–1636), experience seasonal festivals, enjoy delicious food nurtured by fertile land and fishing grounds and relax in famous hot springs.

Jozenji-dori Avenue

Jozenji-dori Avenue, lined with zelkova trees, is the symbolic street of the “City of Trees”, bustling with a variety of events such as JOZENJI STREETJAZZ FESTIVAL and SENDAI Pageant of Starlight. You can truly enjoy the artistic scenery only by strolling around the central promenade furnished with sculptures such as Emilio Greco’s “Memories of Summer” and Venanzo Crocetti’s “Bathing Woman.”

Site of Sendai Castle

Site of Sendai Castle, which was built by Lord Date Masamune(1567-1636) who ruled over 620,000 *koku (one *koku is about 150 kilograms of rice, enough for one person’s annual consumption) of the Sendai domain*. It is also known as “Aoba Castle” to the residents of Sendai since it stands on Mt. Aoba, as a natural stronghold. The statue of Lord Date Masamune riding a horse overlooking the castle town, the restored side turret, and the north wall of the castle’s main citadel that shows the best of masonry techniques give visitors a real sense of history. Aoba Castle Museum is also located in the site.

Zuihoden

Zuihoden is the sacred burial site of federal lord Date Masamune. The grounds are surrounded by a cedar grove filled with pure air. In addition, two other mausoleums stand close together. Kansenden is built on the burial site of the second lord Tadamune (1599–1658), and Zennoden commemorates the third lord Tsunamune (1640–1711). Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous Momoyama-style architecture up close, and spend time in the museum to learn about the history and culture of the Date family with valuable artifacts.

Loople Sendai Bus

Loople Sendai, the retro-designed bus circulates between Sendai Station and major sightseeing spots in the center of the city. You can hop on and off freely at your own pace. It’s recommended to get a one-day pass, if you wish to visit several spots a day.

Sendai Aoba Festival

One of historical festivals of Sendai, the “Sendai Aoba Festival,” is held on the third Saturday and Sunday of May every year. On the first day, the city is surrounded by an energetic atmosphere with almost 5,000 dancers who perform the vibrant “Suzume Odori” while jumping along to the festival music at Yoimatsuri(the eve of the festival). You can even jump in to participate on the day of the festival.
On the second day, Honmatsuri (the main festival), a heroic samurai procession and dynamic yamahoko floats parade through the streets.

Sendai Tanabata Festival

Sendai Tanabata Festival, one of the largest tanabata celebrations in Japan, has continued since the Edo period in the early 17th century. This traditional event has been held from August 6th to 8th and attracts approximately 2 million visitors every year. Elaborate gorgeous tanabata ornaments which are newly handcrafted every year decorate the shopping arcade from Sendai Station to Ichibancho and fill up the whole city with an atmosphere of the festival.
Furthermore, the fireworks festival on the eve of the festival on August 5th is another must-see.
